Fight Club, a classic film, appears to have been censored in China that changed the entire original ending of the movie.
The original ending which originally saw the protagonist destroy the office towers of the financial institutions integral to the global company was replaced by a message with an English translation that read: “Through the clue provided by Tyler, the police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding. After the trial, Tyler was sent to [a] lunatic asylum receiving psychological treatment. He was discharged from the hospital in 2012.”
Many fans have been enraged by the stark change to the original ending of the 1999 Fight Club film.
However, the author of Fight Club has come out in support of the new “happy endings” claiming that it was more faithful to his book.
Chuck Palahniuk described the change, which sees the police successfully foiling the anarchist bombing plot, as “SUPER wonderful”.
He said in an interview: “The irony is that the way the Chinese have changed it is they’ve aligned the ending almost exactly with the ending of the book, as opposed to [the director David] Fincher’s ending, which was the more spectacular visual ending. So in a way, the Chinese brought the movie back to the book a little bit.”
