The Mpumalanga department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform’s chief financial officer (CFO) has been fired after allegedly creating fake email accounts to “defame” the premier and the head of the department.

Andries Letswalo was fired last week Thursday after being subjected to an internal disciplinary action over the December emails in which he allegedly implicated the premier and head of the department in corruption activity.

Letswalo also accused the department head of preferential treatment and giving tenders to his friends who are contractors. The department head was also accused of taking bribes and diverting money to other projects.

Department spokesperson Zanele Shabangu on Monday confirmed Letswalo has been fired.

“The chief financial officer [CFO] was dismissed on account of misconduct in that he contravened the  information and communication technology policy, to which he used unauthorised, anonymous and pseudonymous addresses for electronic emails. He altered the content with an intention to deceive. He misrepresented and forged the identity of the sender,” said Shabangu.

She said proper disciplinary procedures were followed in the investigation despite the HOD being an aggrieved party in the matter.
