The SANDF denied claims that the fire at the Waterkloof Air Force Base on Sunday is somehow linked to the fire at Parliament earlier this month.
According to SANDF spokesperson, Brigadier Andries Mahapa the fire broke out at the bulk fuel storage facility at about 7pm and firefighters from Waterkloof and Swartkops managed to contain it within in an hour.
It is possible that the fire might have been caused by a leakage from a burst pump.
Mahapa cautioned against making unfounded assumptions, stating that investigation were underway and that a team of air force firefighters, the chief firefighter and the Tshwane firefighters are all investigating the cause of the fire.
Rumours started circulating on social media that the fires at Parliament and Waterkloof are related but Mahapa rejected the rumour saying that, “There is no link whatsoever.”
He also rejected the notion of foul play being the cause of the fire as the air force base is monitored by 24-hour security.
