New Zealand is sending air relief to aid Tonga but ash on the capital’s main airport runway is preventing the planes from landing. It will also be several days before military ships with supplies will reach the islands.
Fears of a possible humanitarian crises developing on Tonga are growing after the volcano eruption on Saturday which sparked a tsunami and severed an undersea cable which cut the country off from the outside world.
New Zealand and Australia have conducted surveillance flights to assess the damage. At least one person is confirmed to be dead, while the number of those injured is still unknown.
Three deaths were reported but were unconfirmed, it’s also unclear if the number includes the one confirmed death of a British national, who died as she was washed away while trying to save her dogs.
