Eight Johannesburg councilors are facing charges for what John Steenhuisen (DA leader) called a “descent into chaos” at the first council meeting for 2022 on 13 January.
The election of committee chairpersons who monitor the administration of the city was abandoned after being disrupted by ANC and EFF members.
In the lead-up to a meeting on 18 January, the eight parties that form Johannesburg’s minority coalition government said that security was being increased.
The Action SA chairperson said that the council Speaker would ensure that the committee chairperson elections went ahead, but if they did not, the coalition parties would go to court.
Steenhuisen said that disruptors would be reported to the council’s ethics committee which could dock their pay.
The previous meeting was disrupted when the ANC-EFF team objected to holding elections by a show of hands and insisted that secret ballots should be cast.
