Inmates were allegedly raped and assaulted in police cells after a member of the police allegedly gave inmates alcohol and marijuana on New Year’s Eve. The inmates apparently became so intoxicated that they allegedly assaulted and raped other prisoners in the cells.

Brig. Motlafela Mojapelo, police spokesperson, says the sergeant (39) was suspended after he allegedly provided the drugs to prisoners in the police cells at Phalaborwa police station on 31 December 2021. This led to violent crime in the cells.

Rape and assault

Six charges of assault with intent to seriously injure (GBH) and two charges of rape were opened in the aftermath. Two suspects, aged 23 and 39, were arrested.

The inmates charged of the crime in the police cells appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court on charges of six counts of assault and two counts of rape.
