VACANCY: Financial Accountant at De Beers Benefit Society

The De Beers Benefit Society (the Society), the oldest registered medical scheme in South Africa, is an accredited self-administered restricted medical scheme, for the employees and pensioners of De Beers South Africa and is based in Kimberley.

The Society is seeking to employ an experienced, highly motivated and self-disciplined Financial Accountant with strong analytical, problem solving and multi-disciplinary business process skills, as well as advanced integrated computer system knowledge and literacy.

Key Performance Areas:

The position reports to the Society Financial Manager and will be supported by a dedicated team, other departments, and multiple external service providers. The incumbent will be responsible for, amongst others, the following:

  • Providing technical financial advice;
  • Managing the operational activities of the Society’s finance department in accordance with agreed financial and operating standards;
  • Maintaining productive relationships with other departments, external service providers and stakeholders;
  • Implementing and maintaining adequate and effective governance structures, systems, controls and procedures, which is aligned to the Society’s needs to ensure:
    • An efficient operation which conforms with industry best practice and is compliant with the Medical Schemes Act, the Society Rules and other relevant legislation/regulations;
    • the integrity and reliability of information;
    • the timeous preparation of accurate value-adding management, Board and regulatory reporting (including the supply of data/information to3rd parties); and  
    • the adequate safeguarding of assets, records and data;
  • Co-ordinating the preparation, including review, of the monthly reconciliation files, including year-end audit files;
  • Assisting with the preparation of monthly/quarterly management reports, annual financial statements and budgets;
  • Assisting with the completion and submitting of monthly, quarterly and annual financial submissions to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS);
  • Authorising control account reconciliations, accounting transactions and journal entries;
  • Monitoring legislative and other regulatory compliance;
  • Ensuring that SARS requirements are adhered to, bi-annual submissions to SARS are done and tax certificates are distributed to members;
  • Assisting in the development, implementation and maintenance of approved policies and procedures and risk management principles;
  • Drafting and updating of standard operating procedures (SOPs);
  • Ensuring that effective and efficient staff supervision, performance management, and coaching, mentoring and development of subordinates an are in place; and
  • Assisting management with ad-hoc projects.

  • Ability to work on his/her own and within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to plan, co-ordinate and execute the finance team’s and own work efficiently, as well as to simultaneously deal effectively with several issues  
  • Strong customer focused service orientation
  • Sound knowledge, understanding and ability to practically apply accounting and corporate governance principles
  • Professionalism, personal insight, self-disciplined and integrity
  • Precise with high attention to detail, maintaining standards and quality
  • Deadline driven, delivery focussed and stress tolerant
  • Good verbal and written communication, report writing and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with colleagues, service providers and other professionals
  • Project and change management skills

Minimum Requirements:

  • Recognised tertiary qualification in accounting with completed articles
  • 3 to 4 years’ experience in a financial environment with supervisory and financial reporting responsibilities
  • CA(SA) or similar professional qualification will be advantageous
  • Demonstrated ability to interface successfully at all organisational levels and varied stakeholders
  • Prior experience in the medical scheme industry, including relevant legislation and regulation will be advantageous
  • Proficiency in MS Office (including MS Word, Access and Excel) and Pastel
