Accountant Ranash Singh was killed in a suspected “hit” yesterday morning while driving in La Lucia.

According to a security guard, Singh crashed his vehicle through the gate of a business premises on Armstrong Avenue in an attempt to escape his attackers. The vehicle came to a stop against one of the building’s pillars.

“I had gone out to buy a cigarette and I left the gate closed. When I came back, I found emergency services and the police here,” said the security guard.

Family members who arrived at the scene yesterday were in shock and remained huddled together as police and forensic officers collected evidence.

A resident had said that they heard multiple gunshots and came out to see what had happened.

Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst said that paramedics responded to the shooting after 08:00.

“Reports indicate that an adult male had been shot multiple times in what was alleged to be a hit. Medics found the vehicle had come to rest against a pillar, riddled with bullet holes which security officials believe to come from a high calibre rifle. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and sadly showed no signs of life and was declared deceased on the scene by Emer-G-Med.”

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that the police found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body.

“The circumstances around the attack are unknown and a case of murder will be opened at Durban North police station,” she said.
