Boy (13) crashes into mini-bus transporting pupils during joyride

A 13-year-old boy faces a charge of reckless and negligent driving after he allegedly stole his father car and went on a joyride during which he collided into the side of a mini-bus.

He was allegedly attempting to overtake two vehicles in front of him when he collided with the mini-bus taxi.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson, Prem Balram, a total of 23 learners between the ages of four and 12 were injured in the accident.

“23 scholars suffered mild to critical injuries after the teenager crashed into the mini-bus transporting them to school on Thursday morning.”

Balram said that an angry mob had gathered at the scene and threatened to assault the boy who was believed to be responsible for the collision.

“The teenager allegedly stole his father’s vehicle and was on a joyride when he collided into the side of the mini-bus. He was taken into Police custody.”

“The mini-bus taxi capsized, injuring 23 learners between the ages of four and 12 all were transported to hospital for medical attention,” says KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala.

“A case of reckless and negligence driving was registered at Ntuzuma police station as well two road traffic acts fines were issued against both the drivers. The 27-year-old taxi driver charged for an overload as well as the parent for the driver of the light motor vehicle for allowing a minor to drive a vehicle without a driver’s licence.” He added.

Paramedics from various ambulance services stabilized the injured pupils on the scene before transporting them to medical facilities.
