EFF candidate shot and killed in Pietermaritzburg

An EFF candidate running in the 2021 Elections in the Msunduzi Municipality was gunned down over the weekend. Thulani Shangase, based in Pietermaritzburg, was confirmed dead on Monday morning.

According to security group, RTC South Africa the incident occurred when Shangase left a meeting to answer his phone:

“On Sunday, EFF candidate Thulani Shangase was shot dead after briefly leaving a meeting to take a phone call in Pietermaritzburg.”

It is understood that this was a politically motivated assassination in Caluza and that Ward 20 for Pietermaritzburg has now lost a genuine contender for its councilor position.

Police swiftly opened a case of murder and hope to solve this tragic incident soon. Thulani Shangase was holding talks with other party officials before he was taken down by a hail of bullets. No arrests have been made yet.
