The DA is being accused of fuelling racial divisions in the community of Phoenix after putting up election posters that state “The ANC called you racists. The DA calls you heroes”.
This follows after the unrest that caused 36 people in Phoenix to die, with 30 of these people being shot. The killings sparked a countrywide outcry over racism in the area.
The DA provincial chair dismissed accusation of the party spreading racial divisions as the posters would be put up across Durban.
“It’s a matter of fact that the ANC has called people all over the city of Durban racist. We disagree with this sentiment. We agree that they were heroes. They were the blue line between absolute anarchy and the sheer lack of law enforcement during July’s unrest. The citizens of this city were heroes.”
The ANC provincial spokesperson, Nhlakanipho Ntombela, accused the DA of being opportunistic and lacking respect the lives that were lost during the unrest.
“The wounds are still bleeding after the recent massacre of people in Phoenix. We must all reject criminals and the massacre of innocent people. Therefore it is opportunistic of the DA to perpetuate crime and support people accused of murders.”
He added that, “The ANC calls peace loving citizens to ensure that all efforts are employed to reject the DA that wants to turn this province into the epicentre of racism. The disgusting act of the DA to pit people against each other using its election posters erected in the Phoenix area on the north of Durban shows that this party has no respect for human life.”
The ANC also said that the DA posters is the party reminding South Africans that people needed to redouble their efforts in ensuring that South Africa became a truly non-racial country.
“What the DA has done in Phoenix is undisputable undermining our goal of building a united society. The ANC calls on the citizens to strive to end racial exploitation by the DA that plays with their emotions. We believe that members of the public should have a strong content that deals with social cohesion and need for racial harmony,” said Ntombela.
