Facebook Inc experienced a global service outage on Monday that kept all of its social media apps including Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram offline for hours.
Facebook Inc has since issued a statement, blaming the outage on a problem with its network configuration adding that it found no evidence of user data being compromised during the downtime.
In a statement on Tuesday, Facebook Inc said that the faulty configuration change affected the company’s internal tools and systems which complicated attempts to resolve the problem.
Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg apologized on his Facebook page after the network had been restored. “Sorry for the disruption today – I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about,” he wrote.
A Facebook Inc spokesperson said that, “Facebook’s internal tools and communications systems were impacted by the disruption, adding to the challenge for engineers working to identify and resolve the issue. Its internal work product, Workplace, was also affected. Fixing the underlying problem involved visiting a physical server facility and manually resetting some servers.”
Some people also reported experiencing problems using Facebook’s virtual reality headset platform, Oculus, and apps that require Facebook logins were also affected, including Pokémon Go.
Several other tech companies, including Reddit and Twitter, poked fun at Facebook’s predicament.
