Hijacker with toy gun dies in church courtyard during police chase

The death of a suspected hijacker is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) after he died in a church yard in Gugulethu after police allegedly shot him.

The suspect was allegedly involved in a hijacking in which a woman was hijacked outside her garage by two armed men, the men took off in her car but when they spotted a SAPS vehicle they crashed the car and fled on foot.

The suspect was reportedly about to jump over a wall that leads to a church courtyard when he pointed a firearm at police.

Ipid spokesperson, Grace Langa said that officers allegedly shot the man several times as he tried to scale the wall. “He landed in the church yard, where he was declared dead. It was discovered that the deceased had a toy gun. The description of the suspects that was given by the victim of the car hijacking fits the description of the deceased. His parents have been notified about his death accordingly.”

Langa said that the second suspect was arrested and faces a charge of hijacking.
