The principal of Soweto’s Adelaide Tambo School for special needs learners has been chased away from the school by community members after he was accused of exchanging jobs for sex. The principal failed to report for duty yesterday after he was told to stay away by the community of White City in Soweto.
On Tuesday, there was a meeting between the community, the principal and official from the Gauteng Education Department. During the meeting, the community got to express their frustrations with the school and the principal and alleged that the principal was only hiring female workers who would engage in sexual acts with him before they could be employed.
They also complained that the learners did not get enough food, with the last meal being served at 16:00 every day, and that some of the teachers at the school were not qualified.
A former employee of the school said that he was worried about the children as he felt the school was badly run and that the children were not being looked after. He also alleged that the principal was irresponsible and that at least four disabled children died. He claimed he was fired for raising complaints about the school and the principal.
Some community members who protested outside the school expressed their worries that the children were not being looked after and that they did not know if the boarding facilities had the amenities necessary for the learners to be comfortable.
