South Africa has approved the use of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine for children over the age of 12.
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority said that the approval follows a review of updated safety and efficacy information and doesn’t translate into a procurement decision.
Regulators approved the Pfizer vaccine for local use in adults in March. The approval comes after Sinovac Biotech said that a Covid-19 vaccine trial in infants, children and adolescents will take place in South Africa as part of a global study.
The approval of the Pfizer vaccine means that the South African government can now offer vaccinations to children and teenagers.
