President Joe Biden said that the US evacuations from Kabul will continue despite a jihadists attack that killed over 90 people, including 13 US service members.
Biden said that, “We must complete this mission and we will”. He also vowed to hunt down the perpetrators.
Over 100 000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan, which fell to the Taliban on 15 August however many more Afghans have been rushing to the airport ahead of the 31 Augus deadline for US forces to leave.
Biden has vowed to complete the mission, adding “we will not be deterred by terrorists”.
Thursday’s attacks happened at about 18:00 local time with the first target being the Abbey Gate – where US and British forces were processing people to enter the airport. The second attack occurred minutes later at a hotel used by British officials processing Afghans hoping to travel to the UK. Huge crowds had gathered in the area, hoping to be allowed onto an evacuation flight – despite warnings of a significant risk of suicide attacks by ISIS-K.
ISIS-K later claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings with Biden responding: “We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay.”
The threat from ISIS-K remains high and US forces are working with the Taliban to try and prevent further attacks with the Taliban reportedly having already prevented many. However the attack is likely to significantly complicate the evacuation effort ahead of the 31 August deadline.
