At least three people have been killed in the city of Jalalabad on Wednesday, after citizens attempted to launch a peaceful protest against the hostile takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban.
As large crowds gathered to defiantly raise the traditional Afghan flag – which was recently replaced by the Taliban’s own emblem – the militants in charge oversaw a brutal show of strength, by firing into the crowd. More than a dozen injuries were reported and it’s possible that the death toll could rise before the end of the day.
A Taliban spokesperson attempted to turn the story in their favour by saying that they were provoked by troublemakers saying that, “There were some troublemakers who wanted to create issues for us in Jalalabad, at the time of the incident. These people are trying to exploit our relaxed policies.”
In another display of their authority, a statue of a prominent ant-Taliban fighter killed by the group before they took power for the first time in the 1990’s has been decapitated in Bamiyan city.
The Taliban took back to power in Afghanistan over the weekend and have been telling the Western media that they intend to be a much more relaxed and culturally modern version of their previous government. But acts like the shooting in Jalalabad show that talk is cheap.
