According to officials, about 1 941 are known to have died in Saturday’s earthquake in Haiti – which is 500 more than the previous figure.
Nearly 10 000 people have been injured and many are still missing after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti. Rescue work has been severely hampered by the heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Grace.
The UN says that about 500 000 children now have limited or no access to shelter, safe water and food. UN Children’s Fund representative, Bruni Maes, said that, “Countless Haitian families who have lost everything due to the earthquake are now living literally with their feet in the water due to the flooding.”
Tens of thousands of people were left homeless by the earthquake and had to decide whether they wanted to stay in the storm or risk returning to structurally compromised buildings.
The earthquake only served to compound the problems faced by the impoverished nation, which was already reëling from a political crisis following the assassination of its president last month.
