President Cyril Ramaphosa is allegedly set to take action against a set of ministers in the security cluster, after South Africa’s intelligence branches were caught off guard by the unprecedented spree of looting and riots earlier this month. According to reports, the president is now willing to go through with a rare Cabinet reshuffle.
The president is reportedly reluctant to shuffle his pack, but it would seem that the response to the riots has left him with no other alternative.
Especially since state Security Minister, Ayanda Dlodlo, has publicly contradicted Police Minister, Bheki Cele, and the pair have continued to argue over the weekend, with each statesperson accusing the other of not doing their job. Dlodlo maintains that she gave the intelligence to Cele, however Cele is adamant that the police department didn’t receive adequate information to prevent the situation.
Then there is the Defence Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who has been openly disagreeing with President Ramaphosa’s version of events. Mapisa-Nqakula famously defied Rampahosa when he declared that an “insurgency attempt” had taken place, before sheepishly backtracking with an apology a few days later.
It seems these ministers have managed to talk their way into trouble with the president reportedly weighing up his options.
Over R50 billion’s worth of damage was caused by the civil unrest with almost 350 people killed and thousands losing their businesses.
