A new device claims to stop hiccups. The HiccAway is a straw-like device that is described as able to halt the involuntary bodily reaction.
Users select either Adult of Child on the device, then place it in a half-full glass of water. They then forcibly sip from the mouthpiece and immediately swallow, in one breath. The cycle is repeated 2-3 cycles without stopping.
The company explain: “HiccAway is a scientific tool based on hiccups’ physiology using the forced inspiratory suction and swallowing manoeuvre to stop hiccups.”
“HiccAway activates the diaphragm muscle and epiglottis by opposing a negative inspiratory force.”
“HiccAway has shown more than 90% effectiveness compared to other remedies for hiccups and is a highly effective alternative solution.”
The $14.00 device was invented by Dr. Ali Seifi, M.D, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at University of Texas Health Science Center.
It is offically known as the Forced Inspiratory Suction and Swallow Tool (FISST).
