‘n Aardvark wat Vrydag 18:00 op die strand by Sunset Beach, Milnerton, Kaapstad uitgespoel het, het versmoor en nie verdrink nie.
Alex & Juanita Aitkenhead Photography het foto’s van die aardvark geneem, waarna die Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds dit verwyder het en oorhandig het aan wildlewedienste om dit te evalueer.
Alex het vermoed dat die dier gesmokkel was, op ‘n boot doodgegaan en oorboord gegooi is, waarna dit uitgespoel en hulle dit ontdek het. Dit kon egter nie bevestig word nie.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA sรช ‘n nadoodse ondersoek deur veearts dr. Luca Mendes het bevind dat die dier nie verdrink het nie, maar wel versmoor het.
Die bevinding is dat die dier reeds dood was toe dit in die water beland het. Die vermoede is of dat dit oorboord van ‘n skip gegooi is, of op ‘n manier van die land af in die see in is.
Die DBV sal met die ondersoek voortgaan.

Volgens Facebook is dit is die tweede dier wat op ‘n vreemde wyse dood op ‘n strand gevind is. Die ander dier was ‘n skilpad wat met ‘n stuk tou aan sy dop vasgemaak gevind is. Dit is nie bevestig nie.

Why do I get the feeling that out wildlife is being smuggled on board a ship and their bodies are being dumped overboard. Something doesn’t makes sense here. Or it does make sense but nobody has investigated it yet.

Aardvarks are a seldom seen animal in the western Cape, and although there is a small population living on the cityโs outskirts, you would count yourself very lucky to see one as they are mostly shy nocturnal animals.
Beachgoers at Milnertonโs Sunset Beach were surprised when one washed ashore on Friday evening. The aardvark was sadly deceased. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA was informed and an autopsy was arranged to determine cause of death.
An independent wildlife veterinarian was able to rule out drowning as the likely cause of death. The aardvark, an adult female, was in otherwise good condition, with no signs of external trauma that might have indicated how she came to be floating in the sea. Examining her heart, he noticed conditions that would indicate that she had suffered from heart failure and some fluid on the lungs would indicate shock lung; which is a state most often caused by suffocation (such as being kept in a box with no ventilation might induce).
The conclusion is that the aardvark was already dead by the time it went into the water, either having been dumped overboard a ship close to shore or was somehow put into the sea from land.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA will continue to investigate this mysterious event and will be looking at camera footage and taking into account reports received from several eye-witnesses to help solve this latest wildlife mystery.
