The Limpopo Health MEC, Dr. Phophi Ramthuba has been widely criticized for the controversial “advice” she gave schoolgirls on Wednesday, telling them to “close their legs” and “open their books”.
While addressing the problem of the high teenage pregnancy rates at a local school, the Health MEC thought the best way to get her target audience to listen is by using a catchy slogan and chant.
Her speech went like this:
“To the girl child, I say: Open your books, and close your legs. Don’t open your legs, open your books. Let me hear you say it! Open your books, and close your legs! [x3] – Thank you very much!”
Understandably, this speech has not gone down well with the public especially as teenage pregnancies now include children as young as 10 and 11 reporting that they are pregnant. All too often these girls and children are abuse victims so many pointed out that for the Health MEC to barge in with a poorly-conceived one-liner that essentially blames the girls shows that the point was being missed completely.
Of all the furious responses to the doctor’s school visit this morning, this one probably sums it up best:
While u at it, tell the boys to keep their zips closed too…. a whole doctor talking to girls like this to girls!?
